Maestro Virgil Velasco is a star in the already well regarded San Luis del Rio. Starting very young in both the palenque and the fields, this little mountain town is in the heart of Tlacolula, the regions core mezcal producing area. While the industry is now encouraging monoculture production (using just one varietal), Don Velasco prefers the traditional and biodiverse practice of ensamble production. Using the best ripest fruit and blending the flavors for a unique expression of the regions terroir instead of a devotion to the more profitable single varietal style.
