Description

Rum is an alcoholic beverage that is made from the fermentation and distillation of molasses or sugar cane juice. Most of its production is in America, especially in the Caribbean, although it is also produced in other countries such as the Philippines or India.

After fermentation, the product is distilled at high temperature using a copper or stainless steel still to obtain a high ethanol content. The resulting distillate is then diluted with pure demineralized water until the ethanol concentration is between 35% and 40%. Later, optionally, it is usually aged in oak barrels.

In 1650, Barbados mentioned this drink for the first time in a document. It's called "murder" or "rumballion" (a word from Devon, England, meaning "great commotion"). In the colony of the French Antilles, it was called Giltif (a variant of killing the devil) and later tafia, the term can be African or indigenous. As early as 1667, it was simply called rum. The first official mention of the word rum appeared in an order issued by the Governor of Jamaica on July 8, 1661.
