Often known as Shiraz, the moment this red wine flows on to the palate you experience a punch of flavor that tapers off and then has a spicy peppery note in the aftertaste. Syrah is responsible for some of the darkest full-bodied red wines in the world. It is the perfect accompaniment to meat, although you can drink it with all kinds of food. Aromas can be smoky, floral, peppery, minty or spicy and often linked to a kind of medicinal or creosote-like character. If the wine is from cool climates, you get a minty flavor, pepper-like feel, and spicy tang, but the warmer it gets the more it changes from raspberry to blackberry, becoming chocolaty and, with age, tarry and gamey.
